Workshop Kangaatsiaq 2022

The business council submits proposals for next year’s municipal budget

July 4, 2022

During this spring, Qeqertalik Business Council collected inputs and ideas from the local business and tourist operators. These suggestions are now delivered to the municipal council of Qeqertalik as proposals to the municipal budget of 2023.

About 40 representatives of the business- and tourist operators in Qeqertalik submitted their proposals to Qeqertalik Business Council on how to improve their towns. They made their suggestions at workshops in Aasiaat, Kangaatsiaq, Qeqertarsuaq and Qasigiannguit this spring, as they were invited by Qeqertalik Business Council.

The suggestions are about improving the towns as great places to live, work and be a tourist in. All this adds up to the political aims, that the municipality of Qeqertalik has.

A part of the budget process

Just before the summer vacation, the business council delivered the suggestions to the municipal council of Qeqertalik as a part of the budget process for 2023.

The suggestions from the business operators are mostly based on improvements within infrastructure and recreational opportunities. Some are long term development projects, and others could be implemented shortly after a small investment. Furthermore, several of the suggestions will strengthen the Disko Bay region towards the increasing number of tourists, when the new airport of Ilulissat opens in 2024.

Long term plans for Kangaatsiaq

One of the most active workshops took place in the smallest town of the region, Kangaatsiaq. Here, the participants aimed their focus on development opportunities within the rich cultural life of the town. One of the concrete suggestions from Kangaatsiaq was to establish a cultural center, and another suggestion was to renovate the existing handicraft workshop, which will benefit local business owners.

“At the Kangaatsiaq-workshop focus was on creating a long term development. The citizens of Kangaatsiaq suggested giving the town the opportunity to collect and develop the cultural heritage, that they are proud of. This would give the town a general lift, which the business operators would take advantage of,” Gerth P. Olsen, CEO of Qeqertalik Business Council, says.

Improves the possibilities

In the other towns of Qeqertalik, suggestions were many and far stretching. Among other suggestions were improving of hiking paths and bridges, building of activity centers, toilet facilities and more. Every suggestion could improve the possibilities of the towns and citizens.

“In the business council we were very happy that the business operators participated in our workshops. We are proud to deliver their suggestions to the municipal council, and we look forward to seeing, which suggestions that will appear in the future budget of the municipality,” Gerth P. Olsen says.
