As the world is opening again, new cruise tourists will visit the Disko Bay region. In collaboration with AECO, Destination Diskobay now presents new community guidelines that will help tourists to act sustainable when visiting the destinations.
How should I as a cruise tourist act when visiting the destinations of Disko Bay? May I pet the dogs? And what should I know about the towns I visit?
Those are questions that many tourist have when they sail around in Greenland. Now there are answers and guiding to get.
AECO – a Nordic organization of cruise ships – facilitated the making of “community specifik guidelines” for three of the towns of Disko Bay. Informations to the texts are collected at workshops, coordinated by Destination Diskobay, and with participation from local citizens and tour operators in Aasiaat, Qasigiannguit and Qeqertarsuaq. The project is supported by NORA.
Guides on how to be the “good visitor” in Disko Bay
The new guidelines will be handed out to cruise tourists as they arrive to the destinations in Disko Bay. The guideline is a one-pager with information of where to find drinking water, the mimics of local people, places to see as well as how to act in nature. They are encouraged to support local shops and attractions. The tourists are prepared to be good guests in the towns that they visit.
“These new guidelines support that we create and develop a sustainable tourism in our region,” Linda Kleist – destination manager in Destination Diskobay – says. “It has been important that the guidelines are based on the ideas and subjects that local people has brought up. Only the locals know what is important to take into account in their society.”
