Møde i kulturhallen Sermermiut

Shared Commitment to Diskobay

November 11, 2024

Last week, Destination Diskobay, in collaboration with Explore North Greenland, held a well-attended gathering at Kulturhuset Sermermiut in Ilulissat, where 13 local tour operators participated. The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in Diskobay and find solutions to make it easier for tourists to explore the region.

Director Gerth P. Olsen opened the event with a welcome and an introduction to the day’s agenda, where a key topic was how to improve transportation options for tourists in Diskobay. Following this, Destination Manager Navarana Bidstrup took the floor to present the numerous resources and information available on Destination Diskobay’s website. She highlighted various attractions, towns, and settlements in Diskobay, as well as local operators that tourists and partners might find helpful.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the presentation by Disko Adventures, a local company based in Qeqertarsuaq. Co-founders Danny Mølgaard and Naja Bjerregaard participated via Teams and showcased their unique tour offerings, which in winter include dog sledding on the mountains and snowmobile tours on the island’s ice cap. In the summer, they offer guided hikes through the stunning natural landscapes. Disko Adventures recently won the Greenland Tourism Award 2024 for their notable contributions to tourism.

The meeting laid the groundwork for discussions on new collaboration opportunities among the operators. Diskobay’s range of tourist services is diverse, spanning from boat trips and hiking tours to fishing, hunting trips, and accommodation options. Cooperation between these actors can ensure better coordination of tours and activities, such as the transport of tourists between towns and settlements, making the region more accessible and appealing to visitors.
