Vestnorden Travelmart 2024
The annual travel fair, Vestnorden Travelmart, took place in Tórshavn, the charming capital of the Faroe Islands, on September 24-25, 2024. Destination Diskobay was well-represented by Director Gerth P. Olsen and Destination Manager Navarana Bidstrup, who, along with 34 other Greenlandic companies, participated to showcase the unique travel experiences Greenland has to offer to international travel agents. At the fair, there were a total of approximately 412 participants, including both sellers and buyers from around the world.
At the event, participants had the opportunity to attend various workshops, including a session organized by Visit Greenland. The workshops introduced new initiatives and trends in branding, storytelling, and national certification – key themes essential for building an attractive destination for adventure tourists. The workshops provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and exchange of best practices among the participants, helping to strengthen collaboration and promote Greenland as a leading adventure tourism destination. “We had the pleasure of meeting 19 travel agents from various countries, all of whom showed great interest in the opportunities our region offers. The more experienced agents were particularly curious about our new initiatives, which could create value for their customer segments,” said Gerth P. Olsen.
One of the highlights of this year’s fair was the presentation of the Greenland Tourism Award 2024. The prestigious award was given to Disko Adventures from Qeqertarsuaq, recognizing their innovative approach and contributions to the development of tourism in Greenland. Vestnorden Travelmart 2024 not only served as a platform to present new products and services but also acted as a catalyst for collaboration and future growth in Greenlandic tourism.
Inspiration Tour in the Faroe Islands
Following the conclusion of Vestnorden Travelmart, Navarana Bidstrup and Gerth P. Olsen embarked on an inspiring tour across the stunning Faroe Islands. During the trip, they met with key stakeholders from both business and tourism organizations. Notably, they visited Visit Runavik and Visit North in Klaksvík, both located north of the capital, and who share several challenges similar to those faced in Qeqertalik. Topics discussed included the development of signage systems, managing visitors in sensitive areas, and efforts to extend the tourist season.
Additionally, a productive meeting was held with Vinnuhusið, the Faroese equivalent of Greenland’s Business Association, where they presented their key initiatives and shared insights into statistics on the Faroese business sector.
