Preparation for tourism comes to Qeqertalik
As part of the preparation for the airport expansion in Ilulissat, where we expect that the nearest cities around Disko Bay will also feel the tourism boom, since 2021 had we projects to draw walking routes, city maps and road signs for the most necessary places, such as road signs pointing towards the hospitals, towards the airport/heliport, the hotel and attractions such as museums.
In this connection, we have chosen to take Aasiaat as the first city that needs city maps and road signs, as we believe that the city, as the largest city in the region, needed the signage the most, whereas cities such as Qasigiannguit have already had signs and city maps put up in the city. But we are taking one city at a time and the next city to have road signs put up will be Qeqertarsuaq. In addition, we have already started a dialogue with the local municipal office in Qeqertarsuaq.
The project of getting the city maps set up in the strategically placed places in Aasiaat has taken a little longer than expected, mostly because of the long winters, but also because the frames for the relatively large city maps disappeared without a trace. But now the city maps are set up in several different places in Aasiaat, after some ingenuity in creating new frameworks in collaboration with the municipality and one of the city’s contractors.
“I hope the citizens as well as the guests will use the new direction signs, city maps that have been set up and will take good care of them.” Says Gerth P. Olsen, Managing Director of Qeqertalik Business Council A/S.
The road signs are set up with Danish and English texts, as it is the visitors from outside who need to be guided towards the right places, because the locals already know how society is connected in their respective cities.
The next step will be to have signs made with QR codes for selected historical road names in the cities, so that the background for the naming of the roads will always be remembered far in the future.
